Due to the expected comeback of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as the “swine flu,” Moody’s Crisis Response Team has preemptively issued a memo to the Moody community. As the college environment can be a prime location for H1N1, Moody’s proactive measures, as outlined in the memo, are underscored by prevention.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus. It is spread the same way the seasonal flu occurs—primarily person-to-person via coughing and/or sneezing of those infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching a surface with flu viruses on it and then touching their own mouth or nose.
While corporately Moody is taking precautions to minimize the H1N1 impact, personal hygiene is the foundation of preventative practices. Actions such as washing hands with soap and water regularly, practicing respiratory etiquette and knowing the signs and symptoms of the flu can greatly reduce chances of contracting the virus. Students are also strongly encouraged to visit Health Service on campus if they have a flu-like illness. The Health Service staff will advise the student regarding next steps. For faculty and staff, if the flu or a flu-like illness occurs, it is recommended that they remain home until the fever has been gone for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
