The National Association of Broadcasters declared Monday, February 1, 2010 Broadcaster’s for Haiti Day. As part of this national call to support victims of the January 12 earthquake, Moody Radio joined forces with Compassion International, a worldwide Christian child sponsorship ministry, and the broader Christian community to launch a special one day fundraising event titled Help Haiti with Compassion. Both local and national Moody Radio programs used this day as an opportunity to bring awareness to the continued plight of earthquake victims and raise funds to support their growing needs and they raised $242,646 in support of Haiti. This was a true test of Moody Bible Institute’s faith in God’s provision as Moody Radio is set to begin SHARE 2010, its own season of fundraising, in just a couple of weeks.

“Despite that the current economic situation calls for financial restraint and that we are about to engage our own fundraising efforts, we knew it was important for Moody Radio to partner with Compassion at this time,” said Denny Nugent, National Program Director. “We truly believe in Compassion’s mission and how they are serving the people of Haiti. We decided to trust that God would honor this work and would help provide for Haiti though the funds we raised.”

Compassion’s President, Wess Stafford, was onsite at Moody Radio’s flagship Chicago station all day on February 1 to help facilitate the conversation about conditions in Haiti and encourage listeners to give to this worthy cause.  In a recording, he said to Moody Radio, “On behalf of the ministry of Compassion, the little children, their moms and dads, and the churches of Haiti, I want to say thank you.  Thank you for letting God use you so lovingly and so powerfully today. What you have done is profoundly Christian and the ramifications of this will live on and on.”

“Moody Radio is one of the most well respected broadcast networks in the country and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with it on behalf of the children and families of Haiti,” said Lee Geysbeek, National Radio Marketing Director for Compassion International. “We believe that through this special broadcast that many Moody Radio listeners not only partnered with Compassion for the immediate relief of Haiti, but also committed to stand with us for the long-term to rebuild the local church and it’s ministry to the people of Haiti.”

Compassion has served the country of Haiti for more than 40 years and sponsors over 64,000 Haitian children. Given the role of Compassion ministers as trusted friends and helpers in Haitian communities, Compassion has been able to efficiently and effectively assess needs and provide timely aid. Compassion is uniquely prepared to use the funds donated in Haiti to provide food, clean drinking water, basic medical supplies, temporary shelter, clothing and blankets to victims. It will also donate up to 25 percent of the funds raised to partner with other ministries to meet the needs that are beyond the scope of its programs.
