In October 2009, Moody Bible Institute’s Admissions department joined with a team of undergraduate communications students to create a series of videos that provide a fresh perspective on the Moody experience. Seeking to inspire, encourage and call believers to train in the gifting God has given them, Admissions sought to showcase the talent of current students, while also drawing on their unique ability to connect with incoming students.
“We decided to work with current students because they understand prospective students and how to communicate that Moody is a place to not only prepare for future ministry, but to also find community, spiritual growth and purpose,” said Charles Dresser, dean of admissions. “We have been blessed by the talents of the students who made these videos. They produced a creative, compelling and innovative lens through which to view the mission and vision of Moody.”
Jerod Wanner (senior electronic media/film major), Chad Mezzera (senior electronic media/film major), Scott Visk (senior electronic media/radio major), Marriane Bach (senior electronic media/film major), Christopher Flynn (junior youth ministry major) and recent alum Micah Bourne worked closely with the Admissions staff to create a short metaphorical film and a series of modular films that explore various aspects of life at Moody.
“Our goal was to do something that has not often been done in college recruitment films,” said Mezzera. “Taking this approach forced us to step back, look at Moody and remember why we felt drawn here. We needed to look at our own hearts and think about what we wanted to see when we were considering Moody for college.”
Wanner developed the storyline for A Divine Composition, the metaphorical film that uses allegory and symbolism to articulate the purpose of Moody from a student perspective.
“In the story, the gospel is represented by music and each instrument that is featured is symbolic of the unique gifting we as Christians choose to use in sharing that gospel message with the world,” said Wanner.
The students will continue to work with the Admissions staff to develop topics and content for future modular films, which will focus on subjects such as athletics, dorm life, academic programs and parents.
Production took approximately 16 weeks and the students were responsible for developing the scripts, filming, editing, directing cinematography and scoring music. The project was a partnership between the Communications department and Admissions, allowing the students to receive class credit, while also mastering the skills they are being taught for a purpose extending beyond the classroom. The Admissions department offers a number of opportunities for students to be involved in the promotion of Moody, including internships and Student Ambassadors.
