The July 2010 issue of Radio magazine featured a cover story on Moody Radio’s rebuild of WMFT to serve three stations in Alabama—Tuscaloosa, Dixons Mills and Selma—in addition to a station in Forest, Miss. The rebuild began in 2008 and shows that a modern broadcast facility can be constructed through the creative adaption of available space.

Radio is an industry publication for broadcast management and engineering professionals that highlights new technologies as well as facilities that take advantage of new technologies,” said Mark Williames, director of engineering. “This cover story positions Moody Radio within the broadcasting world as a leader in the use of new technologies.”

WMFT rebuilt its studio complex to improve the efficiency of serving four stations located in different cities. All radio design projects must pay special attention to the acoustic properties of the studios; however, the standard practices of isolated walls, double studs and floating surfaces had major drawbacks for WMFT. If another move or redesign was considered, all of the studio construction materials would be lost. With this in mind, the stations used prefabricated studios, which increased the ease of operation as well as increased work flow and decreased the time off-air due to equipment failure.

“We were approached by Radio mainly because of our successful adaptation of prefabricated vocal booths for studio use,” said Paul Lierman, WMFT’s chief engineer. “However, this article also gave us a unique opportunity to highlight the Christian radio industry and Moody’s broadcast ministries. Already, a number of other Christian broadcasters have commented on how this story is positively impacting their work as well.”
